Fall leagues are in full swing which means the HS season is right around the corner but I wanted to drop this quick note about the region previews
Clearly there were errors in the reporting which I knew was going to happen. I published the articles to show how hard it is to get information on teams here in Utah. We don’t do a great job of sharing data outside of Instagram about our players and teams.
So using AI to research just stats showed me 2 things:
AI isn’t all that great at finding and reporting on data that’s available on the internet. I tried to catch all the errors before hitting publish but missed a bunch (I corrected them once they were realized). One example is that MaxPreps will post photos of players and tag them to other players on the Google Image scrub. It’s actually crazy how many incorrect images are on Google Image search :)
If AI can’t get good information, then a single writer will be even less accurate. There’s no way 1 author can know about every region and every classification. I mean I have been in a lot of gyms in the last few years and watched a lot of basketball in Utah. I coached in 1A and watched games in Manila and San Juan…and I probably have seen less than 5% of players in Utah actually play.
So we need more people to write and share about the players here. It can’t just be me and someone at Prep Hoops trying to cover the players. If it is, the coverage is going to be pretty bad.
To resolve this, I’m working hard to build an app for iPhones were parents can share clips that are tied to their players and make the access free to view and share. It’s taking longer than I thought and it’ll be tied to UtahBasketball.net. I want to democratize access to content creation and disconnect it from the IG algorithms.
Finally, if you want to write about players and regions, send me your thoughts and I’ll publish them here! Email support@utahbasketball.net. I won’t post anything anonymous so you’ll have to stand by what you write.
Soon I will be fully off of writing and reporting for Utah HS Hoops but I don’t want the people to lose the voice so I want to make the hand off with momentum and a strong foundation to build off of!
Stay tuned and let me know if you want to contribute!
